An Initiative

SM Music Club is an initiative dedicated to highlighting the incredible voices of underrepresented composers. Founded in April 2024 by Sean Marshall, a composer of instrumental music who, early in his composition journey, realized the need for an initiative like SM Music Club, acknowledging that in much of the repertoire that exists, musicians may have extensive difficulty in seeing themselves in the music they play.

By learning how to write his own music, Mr. Marshall experienced the sheer depth of musical language and connection, and that epiphany led him to conclude that the identities behind any piece of music matter just as much as the quality of it. Also, understanding that music connects people to themselves, others, and ultimately the world, but on a more meaningful level when all of the identities of said world are present. Therefore, his mission is to attract new sounds to the composition space from composers who, historically, are underrepresented in the industry. 

By providing new and high-quality music, ensembles have the opportunity to level up their skills and repertoire by featuring the voices of the next generation, and therefore, helping to bridge gaps in representation in the soundscape.
